The plot concerns the blossoming relationship between a Bronx waitress (played in the show by Brooke Nipar) and a saxophone player who travels from Chicago to New York to win her heart.

The workshop is being presented by the New Players Theater in association with the Fordham Conservatory Theatre of Baruch Performing Arts Center.

The workshop is designed for New York-based actors in search of a summer break, said producer Harriet Krauss.

“A good friend of mine is trying to get into the financial industry and needs a summer job,” said Krauss. “I’m trying to get him into the arts.”

Students from the Fordham Conservatory will play the leads.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for students to get to work in a professional theater space in a very exciting musical,” said Lisa T. Epstein, director of the conservatory. “[‘She Loves Me’] is as delightful as it is inventive and the product is a good fit for the conservatory’s strength in music and physical theater.”

“She Loves Me” opened on Broadway in 1935 and became part of the Great White Way’s canon with a show-stopping 12-year run that included a 1948-1949 revival and a 2012 Broadway revival.

The show is a product of Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers.

“It’s very high, very high art musical comedy,” said Krauss. “It’s a story with some really deep ideas about gentrification. I think it’s going to be very relevent right now.”
