Wole Soyinka’s ‘The Lion and the Jewel’
Wole Soyinka, the British-born Nobel laureate African author who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1986, has died at the age of 86.
The Lion and the Jewel In this play, Soyinka moves the focus from the individual to the society at large. The theme revolves around the decadent nature of society, wherein the individual attempts to deal with society. The play can be described as a social concern play, because it is mostly focused on the topic of society, culture and political issues.
Wole Soyinka was born in Nigeria in March 1934. He had a greater interest in the fields of literature and drama than in politics. Soyinka was born into an upper class Yoruba family and was educated at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
Soyinka translated Shakespeare’s Henry V and Edward II, while his dramas Othello and Shadows, were widely regarded as experiments in the use of theatre to talk about serious and topical issues.
The play begins with a conversation between The Speaker and The Lion, in which the two discuss the problems associated with the current society. The three characters in the play, the Speaker, The Lion and The Witch, represent the three divergent ideologies of the society.

Many of Soyinka’s plays are set in the past, in order to portray the sufferings of the African people. He compares his plays to the works of the Jewish novelist, the Egyptian novelist, and the African-American playwright.
He has written more than fifteen plays and is known as a postcolonial playwright. Soyinka, like, was a major playwright in the post-colonial period. This is largely due to the fact that, in many African countries, there is a high rate of illiteracy among the population.
Wole Soyinka’s plays can be divided into three categories: fictional, historical and ideological. The fictional plays, such as The Trial of Dedan Kimathi Makwetu, are set in the past; in these plays, people engage with issues which were prevalent during the colonial period.
