Getting Started
Create a new document to work on. You can do so by choosing Create a New Document (File > New) or you can start in a folder and choose Start with a Blank Document (File > Start with a Blank). However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that your document is blank. Depending on the image you are working on, you will likely need to start a background layer. For most general work, a background is useful.
After you create your file, create a new Layer by clicking in the Layers palette and choosing Layer > New > Layer (note: if you create the Layer first, you can set the default layer as “Background”).
In most situations, where you create a layer, it will be a square – this is called the default. However, you can create more complex shapes to use as a mask. To do this:
Click the Layer/Layer Mask/Layer Mask Control buttons at the top of the Layers palette to reveal the options.
Choose More > Layer Control > Reveal (Alt + Shift + R).
Choose the shape you want to use, and click OK.
Note that the Layer Mask is part of the layer. It is not a separate layer.
Once you have a layer, you can move the layer to any position in the Layers palette and adjust its position by clicking and dragging with the Move tool (M) on the tool bar. Note the placement of the position pins. As you move the layer, the position pins will snap to the closest color in the image.
To create a new layer:
Click in the Layers palette.
Choose Layer > New > Layer.
Note: Creating a new layer will usually just create a new layer that’s in the default square. To create a round-shaped layer, choose Layer > New > Custom Shape. Choose the custom shape you want to use. Note that this is a very powerful tool for creating masks. The mask can easily be a cross or anything.

Download the image we will be editing

Tweak Gradient Colors
Click Gradient Map to add colors to the gradient.
Using the Gradient tool, click any area with the gradient to add a color.
You can also use the Hand tool, Polygonal Lasso tool, Magic Wand tool, and Marquee tool to add the desired colors.
Apply Adjustments
By clicking Adjustments, we will select the desired adjustments.
Click Curves.
Go to the Highlight section and deselect the Color Sampler. Click OK.
We will save the settings we have found by clicking the Automatic button.
Create New Layer
By clicking Create a New Layer we will create a new layer on the background. We will change the Opacity to 0% and use this layer to set the contrast ratio. We will not use it to add any new adjustment.
We will use the paint Bucket tool to add the desired color. Click to apply the desired color to the new layer.
Hide the background
Click Background in the Layers panel to hide the background.
We will change the blending mode of the new layer to Soft Light.
Add new layer
Click the New Layer icon to add a new layer on top of the image.
We will use the paint Bucket tool to add the desired color. We will use the same color as we will use in the Gradient layer.
