Creating a layer mask

To prepare a layer for editing, you first must create a layer mask. A layer mask is simply a white or black image file that represents the mask applied to the layer.

The layer mask is a separate raster image file that you can place in your image or use as a separate layer. You can move, resize, and save it. By placing the image in a white or black file, you can hide or display the layer’s pixels.

You can create a layer mask in Photoshop CS5 and later by pressing Ctrl+Alt+S+/– or Shift+Ctrl+Alt+S+/– to access the Layer Mask dialog box, as shown in Figure 11-8.

A black layer mask appears to be a solid color, so don’t be surprised when its pixels appear to be black. When you work with a layer mask, the final appearance of the image will be determined by the pixels in the mask and the pixels in the layer.

If you make a mistake, simply press Ctrl+Alt+Z (PC) or Command+Option+Z (Mac) to undo the layer. Press Ctrl+Z (PC) or Command+Z (Mac) to redo the layer.

After you create a layer mask, simply apply it to the image layer by selecting Layer Mask from the Adjustments palette or the Layers panel (as shown in Figure 11-9). The Layers panel will display a default white or gray mask on a blue or pink layer with a lock symbol, as shown in Figure 11-10.

After you apply the mask, you can alter the mask by duplicating it and making changes to the new mask. You can also delete a mask by using the Delete Layer Mask icon in the Layers panel. You can remove the original mask and create a new mask from a selection with the Mask Selection tool (see Figure 11-11).

Although the process of using layer masks to save time is simple, a layer mask isn’t always appropriate for an image. You can use layer masks for creating drawing and painting layers, as well as adjustment layers, which are discussed in Book IV, Chapter 4.

First, we’ll go over the Photoshop Elements search and finder.

This tutorial will walk you through the steps to search for a specific filter (or ask a deeper question about creating a new filter) and use the filter by clicking on it from the Elements Search window.

Step 1: Open Photoshop Elements

The steps in this tutorial should work for Mac and PC.

If you want to create a new filter to use in Photoshop Elements 11, download the Photoshop Elements 11 app (this is a trial version, if you like it, you can purchase a license for $49).

Go to the Windows or Mac desktop and start Photoshop Elements.

Step 2: Open a new document

Locate a blank Photoshop file. We’re going to make a brand new document that you can start with a new filter that you’ll make.

For this example, we’re going to make a blank B&W photograph using a filter called Violet UV.

If you go to the top menu and select File → New, then select a PSD file.

Select Photoshop Elements as the program you’re creating the new document in.

If you want to create a new filter, select Filters → New Filter → Blur → Discrete Gaussian Blur.

This new filter should have a dropdown menu called “Give an output name”. If you select that, it will prompt you for an output name.

Select “Violet UV” as the output name.

Step 3: Create a Filter

Click on the Filter menu on the menu bar.

This menu is divided into four main areas; Filters, Adjustments, Conversions and Paths.

The Filters menu includes filters that can be used to create new images. Adjustments includes a collection of sliders and controls to create new editing effects.

The Conversions menu has options to change the colors, make grayscale images, or turn images into monochromatic images. The Paths menu is similar to the Paths found in other Adobe graphics apps.

In this example, we’ll find and apply a filter called the Discrete Gaussian Blur (or DGB).

Weary of waiting for Apple to fix its iCloud Photo Library, iOS developer Marco Arment created a workaround that allows users to sync their entire photo library across multiple devices, even if they aren’t using iCloud. “I’ve worked out how to sync the Photos library across multiple devices without using iCloud,” he writes in a blog post.

Instead of using Apple’s cloud-based service, Marco writes, you can download the photos from the iOS devices you have and upload them to a third-party server. “The server then takes care of storing these photos, locking them down to be on a certain device (or devices), and keeping each photo in its own folder on the server. You don’t have to worry about using iCloud at all, and it’s the simplest way that I can think of to sync photos across multiple devices.”

Even though Apple has stated that photos stored in its servers aren’t tamper-proof, Marco writes that anyone who doesn’t trust Apple’s servers can install the app, which syncs Photo Stream, on a third-party server. “If you have a server in the cloud that isn’t controlled by Apple, you can install my iCloud PhotoSync server here to give you the same functionality as iCloud Photo Library.”

The downside, as Marco says, is that the entire gallery has to be installed, which can be a lot of photos. On the plus side, you don’t have to worry about backups, and it’ll even work over cellular connections so you won’t have to worry about Wi-Fi when you’re abroad.

On a related note, iCloud Photo Library has been a contentious issue for many users, particularly those who don’t feel that their precious, time-sensitive photos should be uploaded to Apple’s servers at all.
