MaxLink supports multiple connection types. In the following example, we will use the IP address 192.168.1.1 and port 9090.

Everything that follows is configured by default. You can start a connection by typing java -jar maxlink.jar in your console. The following is a list of all configuration parameters:

maxlink.host – This is the IP address of the computer on the local network.

maxlink.port – This is the TCP port of the remote host that will be used as a communication channel.

maxlink.proxy.host – This is the IP address of a proxy that will be used to send the data through.

maxlink.proxy.port – This is the TCP port of the proxy that will be used as a communication channel.

Running sketches:
With the maxlink.jar file, you can launch Processing sketches. To do so, you need to specify the full path of the sketch and its main() method.

java -jar maxlink.jar YourSketchPath

In the example above, the sketch is located in mydata/data/processing/MySketch.pde

maxlink.run – This is the method that will be used to initialize the sketch and send it a message. It defaults to the static run method of the MySketch class.

If you want to run a sketch that has multiple classes, you can run them by passing the individual classnames as parameters. To do that, you will need to extend the logic of this method so that it includes all classes.

MaxLink is a Java library that provides you with a simple method for establishing a communication between Processing and Max/MSP 4.5+.
MaxLink allows UDP message exchange over the local network and allows you to launch Processing sketches. It comes with a set of tools for creative networking and is very easy to implement.

– No additional software is required other than Java (don’t even need to install a server)
– Since it’s mainly a Max/MSP issue, it’s very easy to implement this kind of solution
– The messages are stored in the memory of the computer so you don’t have a real time connection to the Processing sketch
So it’s a wonderful alternative for you if you want to connect both applications with hardware without high latency.
There are a few libraries that allow communication between Processing and Max/MSP, but this one is the most flexible, stable and easy to implement one of them.
