Can’t access object outside it’s context

I am trying to write a function that populates a dictionary with a list of strings from a file. The function loads the file line by line and creates a new dictionary entry for each line. When I try to populate my “words” dictionary I get an error when I try to access “words” outside the function:

“TypeError: ‘NoneType’ object is not subscriptable”

dict(zip(range(n_words), words)) doesn’t work either but works fine when inside the function. I don’t understand why it can’t access the dictionary outside the function and need some help understanding what is going on here.
