Some of these devices are in the form of a two-sided print, and are typically made of paper, cardboard or a similar type of material. More recently, interactive devices, sometimes called, “clickers,” have been popular.
Typically, these devices can be used to teach a variety of different subjects, such as mathematics, social studies, history, science, geography, arts, etc.
Currently, these types of devices can be made by placing the appropriate subject matter on a flat, two-sided print, the paper or cardboard is then folded, and the borders of the two sides are sealed to permanently bind the material as a single two-sided print. One such device is known as the “Learn-a-Box.”
For many of these devices, once the material is completed and assembled in this manner, it becomes essentially useless for any other purpose. This is because of the permanent nature of the connection of the individual pieces.
To use the device, the two sides of the box are separated and the sides of the material are opened to create individual pieces of the subject material.
When the pieces are being carried, they can be easily separated by a teacher. Once separated, the material is cumbersome to carry and care must be taken to carry only one piece at a time. In many cases, it is difficult to see the piece on the teacher’s hand, and it often becomes lost.
Another common method of use for these interactive two-sided prints is to provide the material in a cassette that is placed in a plastic or cardboard case. This material can be separated on site, opened and carried by a student.

In a previous publication of a 7-yr study, the authors reported that late, but not prompt, bronchial responses to inhaled histamine were seen in 35% of children with atopic asthma, 16% with allergic rhinitis and nonatopic asthma, and 14% with nonatopic rhinitis (P less than 0.005, chi 2). However, in the present report, the frequency of occurrence of late, as compared to prompt, histamine bronchoprovocation responses was examined in 61 children with atopic asthma. This subset of children had peripheral blood eosinophil counts greater than 300 cells/mm3, a laboratory definition of asthma. Histamine bronchoprovocation was performed in this population as described in the previous report. Early and late responses were defined in a manner that parallels the previously published definitions. Late responses were defined as a 20% increase in the provocative dose of histamine needed to double the forced expiratory volume in 1 s after 20 min from the initial challenge. Prompt responses were defined as a 20% increase in the provocative dose of histamine needed to double the forced expiratory volume in 1 s after 5 min from the initial challenge. Early and late responses were seen in 56% of children with atopic asthma (n = 17) and in 11% of children without atopy (n = 1, P = 0.0001). Late responses were seen more frequently in the children with asthma and elevated peripheral blood eosinophil counts (81% of patients with asthma, 85% of patients with atopic asthma, and 45% of patients with eosinophilia, P = 0.01) as compared to the patients with asthma and no eosinophilia (9%) or normal eosinophil counts (27%). There were no significant differences between patients with asthma and nonatopic rhinitis with late or prompt histamine responses, and the only patient without asthma with an increase in FEV1 greater than 20% over baseline after 5 min after histamine challenge had a late response (baseline FEV1 1.54 L; 5 min posthistamine FEV1 1.69 L; P = 0.0001).
