Mathematics, however, is not presented systematically; it is taught without any special method, as if the teaching of mathematics were a matter of having a certain idea in one’s head. But to acquire a true idea one must realize it and think about it. The result is that, in general, students of school and college fail to understand the meaning of mathematical concepts. Why, for example, can not students of chemistry manage to understand Newton’s laws of gravity?
It is generally assumed that the teaching of mathematics and physics consists mainly in imparting the knowledge of methods and rules, while it is not understood what is the physical meaning of these methods and rules.
Mathematics is the only science which teaches students to understand the laws of the whole world, but in the history of the development of mathematics this has not yet been achieved. It is true that one can understand the motions of the planets and the laws of gravity; but they are mathematical ideas which have no physical meaning.
