To understand these physicochemical properties, the present work examines the partitioning of five transition-metal ions, Cr(III), Cu(II), Fe(III), Co(II), and Ni(II) in surfactant-mineral-water biphasic systems in the pH range 4.0-11.0. The metal ion-CTMA association is determined by the distribution coefficient, k(m), from the subphase to the surfactant-rich phase and by the distribution coefficient, k(b), between the two phases. The present results show that the distribution of all the investigated transition-metal ions decreases in a non-linear manner with increasing concentration of cationic surfactant. The highest distribution coefficient, k(m), is obtained at the lowest concentration of CTMA. However, k(m) decreases with the increase in the concentration of CTMA. This indicates the existence of a dynamic equilibrium between the surfactant-rich phase and the aqueous subphase in the system. In contrast, the distribution coefficient, k(b), for all the investigated transition-metal ions increases with increasing CTMA concentration. Such behaviour of k(b) indicates the formation of bimetallic aggregates at the interface between the water and the surfactant phases./*
