The AutoCAD app has been one of the most popular and well-received apps in the mobile world, with over 41 million downloads as of December 2015. Users, who depend on AutoCAD for work, have demonstrated a high degree of loyalty to the app, with 94% of users using AutoCAD daily and 66% of users using it multiple times per day.

AutoCAD Introduction

AutoCAD debuted in 1982 as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. After a number of iterations, AutoCAD was upgraded to its current version in 1998 and brought to the web in 2000.

While the original developers marketed AutoCAD as a drafting tool, the software has become a full-featured CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting) package. The application’s user interface was heavily influenced by the “drawing pad” that replaced the mouse and command line in Apple’s Newton OS for the Apple Newton device.

Software Development and Release Timeline

AutoCAD’s introduction and evolution through the years is closely linked with the product’s development timeline. As AutoCAD developer Ken Garland explained in a 2009 post on the Autodesk blog:

“AutoCAD has gone through a long and involved development history, with many parts of the application, like its User Interface, Modelling, Drafting, Feature Extraction and Drawing Tools becoming and evolving very quickly, as the product has become more of a mass market business.”

In a keynote speech at the Society for Technical Communication’s (STC) conference in 2009, AutoCAD application developer Kienz R. Seiling shared the “Birth of AutoCAD” story. Here’s an excerpt of his speech:

“In 1982, my partner, Kip Long, and I, working for the small drafting company that produced our own drawings, together with our Macintosh, decided to do something that we had talked about a lot in the past and that we still hoped to do someday. We wanted to produce a good drafting program in a computer. […] Autodesk worked with us, and the first AutoCAD was released in 1982.”

The Long View (album)

The Long View is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Tift Merritt. It was released on July 7, 2018, by Nonesuch Records. The album was produced by Stephen Marcussen, who also produced Merritt’s previous two albums. It contains 16 tracks, including one each from Merritt’s two previous albums.

Critical reception

The Long View received critical acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received an average score of 81, based on 15 reviews, which indicates “universal acclaim”. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic, while giving the album four out of five stars, writes that “The Long View has a rare balance for Merritt: It’s an album where the singer-songwriter–who has performed convincingly as a solo artist for 15 years, and who has often made thoughtful, quietly introspective music, at the same time–sounds like the album’s producer as well as the author of each song”, and adds “Throughout the album, she communicates the gratitude that she has this opportunity to make music that she can truly call her own. It’s a graceful, touching, and immensely satisfying statement of intent.”

In an interview with Ryan Dombal for Paste, Merritt discussed the album: “I have a tendency to think about making music too much. So I try to keep it on the horizon, keep it in the background, so that my art, my true work, which is my music, is in the forefront and I’m not thinking about any of these other distractions. But I have a tendency to think about it all the time because it’s such a big part of my life. I have a tendency to think about it too much. That’s part of my struggle, but that’s part of my process, too.”
