History
The first graphical user interface for AutoCAD was released in 1987 by its original developer at the time, E. Michael Hoffman, and was called the “Paintwork” user interface. The “Paintwork” user interface was a windowed application that ran on a DOS workstation with a monochrome graphics display. There were no menus, icons or other on-screen symbols; instead, on the display were a series of “cups” and “pens” that corresponded to the tools in the application. The user could select which tool to use and where on the screen to draw.
The “Paintwork” user interface was updated in 1988 with the “Profile” user interface. The Profile user interface was also a windowed application that ran on a DOS workstation with a monochrome graphics display. The Profile user interface showed a menu and the same tools as the Paintwork user interface, but the tools were now presented in a more familiar menu with icons. The Profile user interface was the first user interface that allowed users to move objects on the screen, draw and edit shapes and edit objects.
AutoCAD became a 32-bit application running on Windows operating systems (Windows 3.1 and later) with a graphical user interface in 1991. The AutoCAD user interface was named “ProjectCenter” and featured a palette of icons that allowed users to control the application. The first major release in the Windows version was AutoCAD 2.1 in 1991. The AutoCAD 2.1 user interface featured drop-down menus, icons, and multiple windows that allowed users to see and edit different parts of the application at once. This user interface, although improved, was still text-based, with no mouse-driven navigation or editing.
In 1998, developer Eric Hultgren introduced the “Ribbon” user interface for the Windows version. The Ribbon user interface was text-based with full-screen navigation and editing. The Ribbon user interface allowed users to open and close windows, choose functions from a pop-up menu, and “pin” toolbars to the top of the screen. As new functions were added to AutoCAD, new Ribbon options were added and pinned to the top of the screen. The Ribbon user interface allowed users to create and edit drawings with few mouse movements. This user interface is still in use today.
The AutoCAD user interface was updated for AutoCAD R13 in 2007. This update included
AutoCAD 20.1 2022 [New]
for programming languages
AutoCAD supports multiple programming languages including: VBA, VBScript, LISP, Visual LISP, Visual Basic.NET, ASP.NET, ObjectARX, JavaScript, and Active Scripting. AutoCAD also supports ASP/ASPX scripting, ASP pages, and Active Server Pages (ASP) with the AutoCAD 360 runtime. AutoCAD’s DXF and Drawing Interchange Format (DDF) allow importing and exporting drawing information.
Keyboard shortcuts
AutoCAD users have the option of working within the software using the default keyboard shortcuts, or by installing additional keyboard controls for the software. Some of the commonly used commands include:
Batch command processing can be performed using the PostScript command Postscript Batch which runs through the whole drawing collection to implement these batch scripts.
Features
User interface
AutoCAD has a graphical user interface, or GUI, which is suitable for users who are familiar with a Windows operating system. Most of the user interface is arranged on the screen in layers, allowing users to toggle between viewing the drawing, the drawing detail, and the Drawing Interchange Format (DDF) which is the file format for AutoCAD drawings. The layers and the DDF functionality are accessed using commands in the ribbon. The DDF functionality is used for viewing the AutoCAD drawing files and allows users to open and close DDF drawings, edit the file properties, and save drawings back to DDF format.
Keyboards
AutoCAD offers two types of keyboard shortcuts: basic and advanced. The basic shortcuts are very basic and work with general design functions. They include the following:
A number of AutoCAD operators are also supported, allowing users to generate unique symbols, generate objects, copy and paste objects, and connect to other objects.
Functional properties
When used within a drawing, a drawing is considered functional, or usable, if it contains blocks, lines, splines, circles, arcs, and text. There are three types of blocks: polyline, spline, and text. The Spline Extrusion option in the block command allows blocks of this type to be created. The spline consists of a number of points, which are connected together with spline lines. In AutoCAD, splines are formed in the Solid Works application and are used to model objects such as cupola-like roofs.

What’s New in the?
When AutoCAD is off or not responding, you can continue to work with the model while it is imported into your drawing. No more waiting for your drawing to load. (video: 1:48 min.)
Drafting:
The Drafting Assistant can be configured to require positive selection (rather than just giving you a choice) on new 2D objects.
The Drafting Assistant can be configured to more accurately present the thickness of 2D profiles.
Many details from this release have been greatly simplified.
When your design is complete and you want to close the drawing, you can now right-click a block and choose “Close.”
Clipping along ray surfaces: Now you can draw on a surface that is clipped along a ray. (video: 1:30 min.)
Export colors: Export colors now includes color selections and covers the entire color space, not just the primaries.
3D Dimensioning:
You can now right-click a dimension line and select “Autoplace” to turn a dimension line into an Auto-Place dimension.
Save and Reload: When you save a drawing, you can choose to keep the modified version of the drawing on your system or to preserve a local copy.
Align To Grid and Align To Reference:
Align to Grid: Select any point on the grid to align to and the grid settings are automatically saved with the drawing.
Add axis of rotation to 3D objects: You can now add the axis of rotation to an extruded box.
Pan and zoom in 3D: You can now Pan or Zoom in a 3D model.
Selected points show in a polyline: When you select a point, you can now see the polyline and the nearest segment on the model.
Shape Filters:
More shape filters have been added, including an airfoil shape filter and a wave filter.
Shape Filters: Add new filters to quickly remove the selected faces from your model, or to remove duplicates.
The Shape Filter window can now automatically update as you modify your model.
Handles:
You can now assign a number to your own handle symbols, to remember the number.
