In recent years, Photoshop has expanded to include features that enable nonprofessionals to create interesting work in a much more rapid fashion than was previously possible.
As a tool, Photoshop offers many options for users to work with layer and channel information. In this section, I provide a tutorial on how to use Photoshop’s most basic features. After completing this tutorial, you will be able to work with layers, use the Color Picker, and create a new layer mask. You will also see how to use channels to make selective changes to the red color channel and how to use shape tools to create selectable shapes.
The many applications of Photoshop
In Chapter 2, I explain the need for and benefits of using high-end image editing software to prepare, manipulate, and present your images. Today, Photoshop is one of the most commonly used tools used by creative professionals, graphic designers, architects, and photographers in general, and I show you how to use Photoshop to help you get your best images to clients.

Photoshop represents the ultimate image-editing program in one box. A box that is carefully configured to accommodate your needs. The primary task of the Photoshop user is to manipulate an image by adding and subtracting various layers of color, contrast, and other changes.
Although Photoshop is a rather simple program, I do recommend that you take your time and practice using the application to hone your skills. If you feel that it is more important for you to become proficient, you can purchase a book specifically tailored to teaching Photoshop — I recommend the book Photoshop Elements: The Absolute Beginner’s Guide by Lynda Weinman (Wiley Publishing, Inc.).
Making a layer
Every image has layers, which can be stacked as many as you like and then manipulated or combined to form the image’s final effect. As you create your image, you add layers — layers have names, and layers are basic building blocks of Photoshop. Each layer gives you the ability to treat that part of the image like a separate section of your image that you can modify.
To add a layer, follow these steps:
1. From the Layers palette, select the New Layer button (the little plus sign) and name your new layer by double-clicking on the icon that appears (see Figure 5-1) to create a new layer.

To open images in Photoshop, you must first open it in Photoshop Elements.
Open an image in Photoshop
To open an image in Photoshop, click File > Open, then navigate to the location of the image in the file system. For example, to open the image above, press Ctrl+O (⌘-O on a Mac) to open the image and then navigate to the location of the image on your computer.
When the file opens, double-click the image to import it into the Adobe Photoshop Elements (Photoshop) document (see the next section). You can also drag and drop an image into the Document window of Photoshop Elements. Double-clicking the image just opens the image; when you drag and drop the image, Photoshop Elements will open the file using the settings defined in the window.

When you double-click an image in the Document window of Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Elements will automatically import that image into your document. You can also drag and drop the image into the Document window.
You can edit the image in the image pane (left pane) of Photoshop Elements, or save your edits to your computer.
When you select File > Save, the File Select dialog will open. If you use the Browse button to navigate to the location of the image, you can select it directly. Otherwise, you can open the Save dialog by selecting File > Save or by pressing Shift+Ctrl+S (Shift-⌘-S on a Mac).
Most image file formats can be opened in Photoshop Elements.
The following sections describe how to perform various image editing tasks in Photoshop Elements.
Edit an image in Photoshop Elements
You can edit the image in the Image pane (or you can use one of the tools at the top of the screen that open the tools you need).
You can resize the image using the handles. The width and height of the image are visible in the left and right corners of the Image pane. When you drag the image and drop it on a window, the changes are applied.
Note that in many cases, Photoshop Elements allows the original image to exist alongside the edited version.

So, with a mostly complete interface and a re-written server, I decided to check out how it would perform on a server.
I didn’t expect much, to be honest – it’s not like I have more than a few hundred cores to play with, and the game would be starved of resources. But the results blew me away, and I think you’re going to be shocked by what you can do with a budget gaming PC… Here are the results.
GTX 1080, 8GB RAM, 250GB SSD
This was a small, quiet and cheap server. I have a more modern one, which is quieter, but this one has plenty of space, and was fairly silent.
From left to right – an original Intel 40 watt fanless model; a Scythe Mugen-X (400W PSU); and the low-noise Vantsys model from NZXT. The difference is pretty obvious, even though the Vantsys has a lower max power rating (1250W vs 1600W). I’ll go into more details as soon as I’ve found a better example.
This was done at a pretty relaxed frame rate of 24fps – it’s running at 30 FPS at full resolution, and I’ve got some FPS sliders for you to play with below.
But this is still a small server, so the power draw is far less than a larger PC. I have an X5 Zenith motherboard with a GIGABYTE Z170X-Gaming 3 (Z170/10th Gen Intel H170) and CPU, 8GB DDR4-2400 memory, and a WD Black 1TB SATA 3.0GB/s SSD.
I’ve got no graphics card. The Intel graphics (GTX 10xx series) that this motherboard is meant to be paired with isn’t a high-end card – it’s meant for cheap consumer graphics (specifically the relatively low-cost Celeron and Pentium editions). It’s the cheapest Intel 40 watt fanless graphics card available. So, with the rest of the server being small and cheap, this is the sort of result I’m expecting…
The results are actually pretty good! It’s not as good as the Intel HD 5500 graphics that I’ve used on earlier videos, but the results are similar.

There are several options to handle the high traffic for bots.
If you are serious about getting rid of the bots you might want to play the cat and mouse game with them for a while. Make it so they come in and leave again only to be closed down by you after a day or so.
If you are not serious about it, Google has several tools that you can apply. Depending on how hard bots are hitting your site you can modify either or both of these.
You can block access on IP address level (click the X next to the IP address listed) and filter out the bots from your site.
You can filter out the bots from your site by IP address using the IP Address Blacklist tool.
You can block access to your site in Google search results with the “noindex” attribute in your robots.txt file.
You can block access to your site in Google search results using the Webmaster Tools disavow tool.
Since you mentioned WordPress, I assume you are using a self-hosted blog and that you have the capability to do these changes on your server.
