In addition to the Adobe package of Photoshop, several others are available from sites on the Internet. Also, certain features, such as object slicing and 3-D, require a third-party software program that’s available only from individual developers.
Because you can spend hundreds of hours downloading, buying, and installing Photoshop, I suggest that you start simple. There are two packages of Photoshop that are easy to start with: Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS3 (which is the old Photoshop). See Chapter 8 to find out more about these packages and whether they’re worth getting.
This chapter takes you through many basic features of Photoshop to help you better understand how it works. I try to keep the explanations in simple terms so that you can use Photoshop with ease.
In the following sections, you get a quick review of the software’s interface, describe its basic editing tools, and examine the capabilities of Photoshop’s layers. You discover how to view your work and navigate through the various view options. You get a quick lesson in how to use those features. I include some basic ImageReady tips as well.
Getting acquainted with the image-editing interface
The Photoshop editing interface is described in detail in Book IV, Chapter 2, and if you’re familiar with the interface, this section may seem redundant. The interface is divided into four main areas, as shown in Figure 10-1:
The Layers panel, where you do most of your editing
The image window, where you see your image
The workspace, which is where you create and edit your project
The History panel, where you see thumbnails of all the image editing operations and image adjustments you’ve performed
The interface has many controls, but you see them most when the image you’re working on is displayed. You can see the most common controls as well as the ones that are most likely to be useful to you in a typical Photoshop edit in Figure 10-2.
You get only the controls you need; you don’t see all the controls that you could use. Just find the control you need and adjust it for the picture you’re working on. You don’t need, for example, to see the History panel unless you’re looking for the thumbnails of the previous versions of your image.

A lot of people use this program to edit their photos because it makes it easier to remove unwanted objects or create special effects. It also provides simple tools to add new shapes or create patterns.
Image editing programs like Photoshop Elements come in many different versions. Some of these have different features than others, but they all work in roughly the same way.

Christmas is fast approaching!
I can already feel the crazy beginning to set in…it’s a time of year that can seem magical and restful, the beginning of the Christmas season when I can sit back and enjoy the stillness of a sparkling winter’s day, a day when snow is in the air and goose bumps rise on my skin.
I have been through a lot this past year…and I’m taking a moment to reflect on the gifts it has bestowed.
A couple of weeks ago, my grandmother passed away. At a time when I was at the lowest point of my life, the Lord held a hand out of the darkness and through an online friend, I found the strength to pick up the pieces and put them back together. I knew I’d be okay.
The Lord has blessed me with an amazing family. I know when the worst time is to be this close to folks, but I enjoy being in their company, even on difficult days. As an added bonus, they are all so utterly joy-filled!
I feel blessed to be surrounded by such a godly family.
And then there’s the man I love. The one whose smile and laughter lifts me up when I’m down and the one who has watched me grow over the years. He is my greatest blessing…and I’m incredibly grateful that God chose to bestow his in my life.
I know that the gift of time is what I most appreciate.
Even as my obligations are consuming my time this time of year, I’m trying to be intentional about the moments when I can set my calendar to “free” and enjoy some time with God.
So this Christmas, as our family settles in for our annual Christmas Eve feast, I’m trying to be open to the gift that is being given to me…the gift of rest, of peace, of understanding and acceptance.

How to disable column from MySQL DB when using “Turn Column Into an index”?
I have a MySQL table that I want to add an index to using ALTER TABLE ENGINE=MyISAM ADD INDEX (ID).
However, when I do this, a column ‘0’ gets added to the table.
After looking at this answer, I am aware that I can remove the column using SHOW CREATE TABLE, but it seems cumbersome to do this every time I add an index to a table.
Is there a way to only ALTER the table when a column is used as an index?
