This is a minimal program that decodes one note per WAV file.

The sample rate must be specified for a shorter file, and for this purpose I used
the ‘Header.wav’ file in the Intel Media Samples, and specified 256k samples
and 44100 Hz.

WAV files are initially decoded without any of the ‘VRA’ parameters set.
The VQ files (the wave form file containing the ‘timbre’ part of the music)
are converted into a wave form, using the ‘timbre’ samples for each note in the
file. This converts the notes from a numeric data representation into the
timbre values that are in the waveshapes.

The waveform is searched for any notes in the 1 second length of the file,
with no time information. The code makes no attempt to decode the notes
with a note length that exceeds the sample length. This means that to ‘pull’
an orchestra out of a file that was recorded at a sampling rate of 44,100Hz
will not work, as the file would be 44 seconds long, and the file could have
40 seconds of music, or 7 minutes of music. You can still decode single
instruments, but not a whole orchestra.

The samples that are found are then used to create a FFT for the length
of the sample size. The FFT frequency is reduced to the range that the
audio file should be decoded in by reducing the number of significant
values from 4096 to 512.

Each note found in the file is mapped to a note in the code, and this
is then mapped to a timbre value using the waveform. The same instrument
sound is used for the whole note, and this could become less than ideal
in future releases of this program.

The bass note is decoded, and if the decode ends in a tonal note then it will
be added to the existing tonal note array. If no tonal note is detected in the
decoded note then a unique tonal note is created and added to the tonal note
array.

The same process is used for the other instruments, and each note is sent to
the appropriate instrument decode. All the music is mapped to the corresponding
instruments, so the decoded versions

The Wave Goodbye application was designed to decode music played on a single instrument but which may contain more than one note at a time, such as piano music.
With a little experimentation on the parameter settings, and with a couple of caveats, it performs quite well. If you try to decode a full orchestral work you may get something recognisable out at the end after tweaking the parameter settings, but it will not be very good.
