Mapping between java classes and properties files

I’m in the process of creating a web-based application that reads properties files and tries to access properties with values that have been read in via the properties file. What I’m struggling with is how to map between my java classes and the properties files, as I don’t want to recreate the wheel for properties that have already been created by other people.
What I do have is a Properties class in my project which I want to extend from and use as the base of any properties file that I need. I’ve created an abstract class that extends the Properties class (this abstract class has the exact same instance variables as the Properties class). So basically, the properties that I’m going to store in the properties files are stored in one place and I can read/write them to just one file with a single implementation. I can then extend this abstract class and add to the properties that it stores in the appropriate parts of my custom properties file.
This works, but the problems I’m finding are:

If I have two custom properties classes in my project that are the same, but store different information, will there be conflicts in the values that can be accessed by the various properties files that read from this class? For example, will the correct values be loaded?

I have one place in my project that I use to read/write properties from/to a properties file. I need to be able to update that file without having to restart my web application, which I believe I can do using
