Is it possible to exclude a file named __startup__.py from VCS?
I can exclude directories and files, but I need this specific file excluded from VCS so that other developers on the team aren’t accidentally uploading this file when they’re working on other parts of the codebase.
I tried using.gitignore, but VCS’s ignore works differently from the Unix tool so I can’t use that.

I think you can use.git/info/exclude to specify which files to exclude.

I’m using the gitpython library, the file extension is.pyc and not.py.
but it should work the same way.
EDIT: It appears that it does not detect the.pyc extension. I have noticed that it looks for.py as a symlink.

I’d suggest using version control for source code control for python applications. Anything that is the application under development shouldn’t be stored in version control, and since you mention other developers working on it you might want a private copy of the repository.
However if for some reason you do need to commit the file you can use a post-receive hook and check it’s contents, for example:
touch `find `basename $arg1“{,.pyc,py}`

Also, if the file is only used during development you could make it read-only to prevent accidental commit
chmod +x `find `basename $arg1“{,.pyc,py}`

Also, if you don’t trust your collaborators (or can’t prevent them from committing the file) you can also set the permissions of the directory to 755, which gives the owner all rights, and the group all rights too and prevent anyone without access to the project from committing it.
