Photoshop’s layered editing system is what enables a lot of the editing that you perform in your work. Figure 5-3 shows you the layers system in action by displaying a simple two-layer image.
Photoshop enables you to add or delete layers. Layers are like pages in a book; you can add them as many times as you want.

Understanding layers and how to manipulate them is the first step to creating great images.
Understanding layers
Layers are a way to organize editing in Photoshop. They’re similar to the page tabs in a Word document or the screen tabs of a web browser. You can group related information together in Photoshop layers. Photoshop is well organized in this way. But just as a web browser doesn’t scroll automatically through tabs, Photoshop doesn’t automatically switch to the next layer when you activate an editing tool.
To create a new layer and add it to your image, follow these steps:
1. Click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel or press the Ctrl+N keyboard shortcut.
You see a dialog box where you can select a color for the new layer. (The color displayed isn’t locked into your image. You can move the layer to another area or paint with another color.)
2. Click OK.
Photoshop creates a new layer for you.
The easiest way to add and delete layers is to use the Layers panel. To open this panel, choose Window⇒Layers. The panel will open automatically when you switch to Layers mode, as shown in Figure 5-4.

The following steps work for both macOS and Windows, but I’m only providing steps for macOS here.

1. Creating a Perfect Template
You’ll create a vector template and use it to create a new photo template, a sketch template, a retouching template and a sketch-to-photo template. The photo template is a good start because you’ll get to see the Pen tool in action, but if you make improvements to the photo, it’s easy to make those changes in your sketch template.

I would like to have a shortcut to make the selection of text or images from the keyboard, but the objects I select (like text) become unhovered when I hit a shortcut. Is there a way to make the keyboard shortcuts work with objects that are already being selected?

I know this is an old question, but I found this question when I had a similar issue…
Using the above answer I was able to get the cursor to change after using the keyboard to ‘hit’ a control. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stop the event, so the program was re-initialized every time the key was pressed. What I did to stop this from happening was to set KeyDown to cancel the event so there was no re-triggering event. As a result, the selection ends up not really being changed.
This might not be the answer you are looking for, but it was the only solution I was able to find when I found your question. Hope this helps!
