The Henon Map Module is designed to be used with the MZX1 Harmonic Synthesizer. The basic algorithm was designed to imitate the behavior of a cathode ray tube (CRT) oscilloscope by flashing thru periodic ranges of window. This results in a large range of sounds and a wide variety of strange sound effects. The module allows the circuit to be preset to a specific sound and then used as a note or gate circuit. Note that sound will only occur when the Gate is open.

1. The Synth
The MZX1 has a built in oscilloscope. The oscilloscope can be accessed via User Select Module (1A) and it consists of a range of analog horizontal/vertical traces. All of the traces are capable of being turned off. They can all be individually turned on to different degrees and all of them can also be turned off completely. If a trace is off then nothing will be heard when this trace is selected as the note. To select a trace, select a range of traces (i.e., the left end of the range will be at the left most trace and the right end of the range will be at the right most trace). The range of traces is selected to be one of the following:
The parameter windows should be set to meet your needs (see the screenshots). For note selection: the window can be turned on and off and the amplitude may be adjusted. Most of the controls are self explanatory (see screenshot).

Window 1:
This is the note selection or gate timing window. It cycles thru the range of traces (i.e., the left trace in the range will be selected last) and plays a sound when the trace is selected.
Window 2:
This is the oscilloscope slider. The range of the slider is from the left most trace on the first range of traces (i.e., the left most trace will be 1 the right most trace will be 45) to the right most trace on the last range of traces (i.e., the right most trace will be 45). Using Henon map equations, you can map between two curves in such a way that the transfer function varies nonlinearly, thereby generating a new curve that can be used as a function of time. Thus, you can make a functional connection between any two functions.
Note that the Henon map equations can be used with just about any curve or function. But some curves will not lead to a good result for some functions. For example, in this example we will use curves for fretting and pressing, which are a family of sine curves. The problem is that the sine curve is a much better functional fit for the square wave from the ADSR envelope than the waveform in SynthEdit. This difference in smoothness or tolerance to “overshoot” means that the functional mapping does not always look smooth.
Henon map can produce a smooth map from a highly nonlinear control (like ADSR) to a very linear control (like a fret/press). It works well in combination with the Infinite Gate Envelope as a time varying filter.
The user can control the curve behavior using the following controls:
* Function – This parameter controls the shape of the function. The default is Linear. Use this if your curve looks “linear” or “nice” but not quite the functional fit you want. You can also use nonlinear (ie. anything other than Linear) functions.
* Area – This parameter controls how fast the function varies. The default is Infinite. If this parameter is set to anything other than Infinite, the function will iterate by having itself evaluated at a regular interval. Use this parameter to create any kind of evolution or turbulence.
* Anti-Ramp – This parameter controls how fast the function increases. The default is Infinite. If this parameter is set to anything other than Infinite, the function will iterate by having itself evaluated at a regular interval. Use this to “create” a ramp that ends with a “boom”.
* Overshoot – This parameter controls how much the control can grow before it reaches its maximum. The default is Infinite.
