NEW YORK (Reuters) – Citigroup Inc C.N has agreed to pay $48 million to settle claims that some of its New York employees and contractors signed up for discount credit cards offered by JPMorgan Chase & Co JPM.N, a federal lawsuit filed on Thursday alleges.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, names a total of 14 people who it alleges either individually or as part of the Citigroup New York branch of the bank signed up for zero-percent-interest cards offered by the bank and other financial institutions, but did not pay their balance.
They included managers, IT professionals, customer service representatives and others, according to the lawsuit, which seeks class-action status and asks for more than $50 million in damages.
The charges for the Citibank cards were in addition to their normal credit card payments and carried a 25-percent origination fee, among other associated fees, the lawsuit said.
The offer of zero-percent interest was extended only to current and former employees of the bank as an incentive to sign up for the cards, the lawsuit alleges.
The bank said in a statement that it is committed to protecting the privacy of its customers. “We’ve been in compliance with all laws and privacy regulations. We have a robust compliance program in place to maintain the highest privacy standards.”
Citigroup did not respond to additional questions on the allegations.
