In this book, I use the term _photography_ to refer to taking pictures; _photography_ is the broader term to include many other creative visual arts.
One of the most basic tasks in Photoshop is applying a filter, either a preset or user-created filter. The filter allows you to alter your images in some way. For example, you may apply a sharpening filter to an image after you’ve taken it in the field, to prepare it for printing. You may even try to create certain effects like those popularized by, say, the film industry. These effects are usually applied to images before they’re even printed, so they’re less useful for digital photography. (See the “Photoshop filters and effects” section in Chapter 5 for more on doing more with Photoshop filters.)
You can also make a _grayscale image,_ which is a single layer in which the colors have been completely removed from the image. The grayscale image is useful in situations in which you want to manipulate an image to emphasize one particular part of it while removing the colors from the rest, which provides an easy way to see the parts you want to work on.
Creating New Images
After you edit a photo in Photoshop, the next step is to save it as a new image. There are numerous ways to save a finished image, and many areas of the program have editing tools that help you create images that best fit your vision.
You don’t want to save an image as a temporary file because this could prevent the image from being saved.
When an image is saved, a new file is created. To save a photo you have edited in Photoshop, simply select the photo you want to save and click the Save button on the Info panel or press Ctrl+S. If you want to save a copy of the file, you can press Ctrl+Alt+S.
Because the file will be saved as a copy, you may need to select the Edit > Copy function (Ctrl+C) to copy a layer, or the Edit > Paste function (Ctrl+V) to paste the image onto another layer.
Image editing and saving is vital to the success of your projects. If you’re not familiar with the terminology of editing and saving in Photoshop, you may be ill prepared to do any project beyond the scope of this book.

Some questions about LDAP connection and authentication
Here are few questions I have about LDAP connection and authentication:
What is the difference between i) LDAP directory (just storing users in a DB), ii) LDAP directory and Active Directory (storing the users in a DB and authenticating them with the Active Directory account in the same DB)?
If I have an Active Directory with two OU’s: “Top” and “Base”, which one do I use in my LDAP directory?
If I have a Server A, a Server B and a Server C:
A) Is there a way to connect/ authenticate/ register users on Server A with Server B?
B) Is there a way to connect/ authenticate/ register users on Server A with Server C?
C) Is there a way to connect/ authenticate/ register users on Server B with Server C?

Different types of LDAP directory is quite an overstatement, but if you have a directory with as many as you can imagine, the only thing that can make any sense is to have it in an Active Directory structure.
The two parts you mentioned are a bit closer. Typically, you would define your directory in an Active Directory-like structure, including users, groups, user privileges and so on, with one or more top-level OU, say “Top”, “Base” and “People”.
Top is where your user database will live, and Base is where your groups are managed. People is where you place your common users and groups. If you have a directory of employees, you would put the user in Base and add an employee type to it (Office or whatever), so the user would belong to his office or department.
You can define multiple users per attribute (users) and/or group (groups) in a single OU. So, if you have one OU for users and another one for groups, you would be able to define just one user with two groups.
If you have multiple AD domains, you can either define your LDAP directory in all of them, or create a separate directory and configure a DS (DNS server) and then connect it to the AD servers you want to be part of it (each AD server would act as a forwarder to the other AD server). You would still need to modify your Directory schema to include more than one Domain, for example, users must be in both Base and People.
