Creating a New Document

Photoshop uses the layers as an organizational tool. Layers are the logical building blocks of an image, in that they consist of individual shapes that you can manipulate, move, and crop individually. You can assign a layer’s individual shapes to a layer mask — a spot on a layer that represents transparency — and use this mask to control the way an object appears on the canvas.

When working in Photoshop, the background is Layer 1, the foreground is Layer 0, and the middle gray is Layer 2 (the Layer Thumbnail). This layer-based organization makes it easy to work on your image.

From the Type drop-down menu, choose Flat. Set your Units to inches and enter a Width and Height of 8. Click OK.

A few settings need to be adjusted before you start working in Photoshop. First, it’s a good idea to change the default size of the workspace, or canvas. By setting the Size option, you choose the canvas size, and then the Unit option lets you choose whether you want it in pixels, percentage, or points (the default setting). Most people want to work with pixels, but it’s good to understand percentages. I also select the Scale button and enter a Width and Height of 1440 pixels.
