Saving Your Photos for Later
One of the most useful functions that Photoshop provides is the ability to save images for later editing. (For more on working with images, be sure to check out the book Photoshop for Photographers For Dummies, by Philip Meyers and David Coffin.)
Because Photoshop creates image files with.psd and.photoshop extensions, you need to save in those formats in order for those files to open up later on your computer. Because.jpg and.png files don’t use those extensions, they won’t open up automatically. (And you can’t open an old Photoshop project using a non-Photoshop program.)
After you’ve created your image, you can save it in.psd format by using File⇒Save As. The Save As dialog box appears as shown in Figure 11-3.
Save your image at a location and file name of your choosing. Click OK to save the file.

You can save multiple versions of the same image using Photoshop’s History or History panel by using the Save from history command in the Edit menu. Alternatively, you can save multiple versions of an image using Image⇒Create a Copy command. Either of these commands creates a new version of the image and also saves it. Note that the Create a Copy command creates a copy; if you want a duplicate of the original (often called a clone), use the Duplicate Images option in the main Image menu.
Although it’s great to have your images save for later editing, you can also save a photo for a specific purpose and then delete it. However, we wouldn’t recommend saving photos for an unknown and unplanned purpose for fear of accidentally using them in an inappropriate setting.
Saving Photos for Sharing Online
Another great feature of Photoshop is the ability to save your work directly online, or to any of the services Photoshop supports.
To save online, select File⇒Save For Web & Devices. The Save For Web dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 11-4

The purpose of this notice is to announce the entry of new information concerning misconduct in research involving human subjects and the potential for research misconduct by Dr. Yuping Lin in research conducted by or with Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval at Drexel University. Dr. Lin is currently the Director of the Division of Radiation Oncology and the Vice Chair of Radiation Oncology at Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Lin is also a radiation oncologist practicing at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ), and the VA Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Lin’s research includes research concerning the immunotherapy of head and neck cancer. The investigation, which was initiated in June 2002, concerns three Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved protocols that Dr. Lin conducted as principal investigator. The following summary describes the results of that investigation.
On July 5, 2005, Dr. Yuping Lin’s laboratory returned 1) an ethics opinion letter, 2) a consent form, and 3) patient research data to the Drexel University IRB. In that communication, Dr. Lin explained that he had created several protocols for different types of patients and that the resulting data was stored as hard disk drives in a laboratory in his office. He reported that laboratory records showed that he had utilized that data for research that met the definition of human subjects research as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Dr. Lin stated that he and his personnel had created a computer program that sorted patient data and converted it into a format suitable for analysis by a statistical program called SPSS. Dr. Lin stated that he had the original patient data on five computers that were located in his laboratory. He explained that he could not presently transfer that data because he had lost the five computers, but that he was providing his laboratory personnel with a floppy disk containing a copy of the original patient data.
Based on the record provided, including Dr. Lin’s explanation for the loss of the five computers in his laboratory, the Drexel University IRB determined that it was not practical for Dr. Lin to obtain five computer hard drives and that he had violated three IRB approved protocols.
