Modern Dating Etiquette
Dating etiquette is not necessarily different from ordinary life etiquette, but on dating apps and websites, it may be more strictly enforced. Swipe right for everything!
Attitude
A dating app’s name, “Hinge,” stands for “Hope Ingenue Navigates Everyone,” so we know you came to set sail.
Here’s why: Attitudes are a big deal. Studies show that most people are less likely to have sex with someone they do not find desirable. In fact, a recent study showed that people who have casual sex (even hooking up) are more likely to show up as virgins the next time they have sex because their self-image is tarnished.
Some people don’t care about this, and there are people who think there is no place for morals in dating. I’ll admit I’m one of them. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about others. When I find myself rushing my way toward a toxic person, I take a step back and ask myself what my intentions are. If I’m just trying to find fun, meaningless sex, I’m not doing anyone a favor.
This is the situation where attitude makes a big difference. If you’re a guy, do you go after someone who is a female college student or a beautiful woman, or do you go after a woman who is not what you want? I’ll admit that I’ve been out with a few different girls at one time who were not what I wanted. I quickly learned that being more selective is more appealing, even to those who were once willing to share. But if a woman’s attitude toward you makes you uncomfortable, she’s going to make you work for that relationship. Chicks are really good at making themselves seem like a prize. I’m the first to admit that I sometimes pander, but I won’t pander to girls who don’t see me as more than a sex object.
Modern dating apps are often used for casual sex, and while there are a lot of anti-slut shaming features, people still use the apps to hook up. If you’re in a relationship, you’re going to have to approach dating differently. Dating apps don’t allow for any kind of privacy and your relationship will seem a little less real.

First, let’s define our terms. Casual dating is kind of what you may be used to; it’s the type of relationship where there is no committed relationship. It’s casual. It’s more of a social activity, but it’s still a relationship and has some form of commitment. Flirting can happen, but it’s not necessarily serious or deep. For example, if you’re out with friends and a guy swoops in to talk to you, you wouldn’t be upset because you think he might actually like you, or because it’s obvious he’s hitting on you, it’s strictly social. It’s more about the environment and the interaction than anything else.
On the other hand, serious dating is pretty different. Usually, you are really interested in this person, and you may have things in common besides a shared interest in that guy or girl. You feel something, and you know that this is the kind of person you want to spend the rest of your life with. It’s more about the relationship than the interaction. It’s deeper. It’s more personal. It’s far more than a game of “the closer.”
(Note: Unless you want to be labeled as “dick measuring”—i.e., a person whose only criteria are penis size, I suggest you steer clear of dick measuring. That’s not what serious dating is about.)
At the same time, I’m not necessarily advocating the notion that you need to be a low-maintenance person or can treat anyone you’re dating like your maid. If you are comfortable with your time, it’s okay to treat your partner with respect. Likewise, if you are someone that is picky and wants to go out with the “perfect” person—which you probably are if you are reading this—you need to learn that being with a sub-par human being is not what serious dating is all about. You need to learn how to compromise, how to be open-minded, and how to treat people with kindness, regardless of who they are.
“These are three things that I want to see if someone is into me,” says Gina, who is a professional fitness model and works at a retail store in her spare time. “1) Is this person funny and engaging? 2) Do they engage me? 3) Do I like them?”
We asked her how she knew if someone was interested and wanted to date, and here are her words of wisdom.
