I don’t have a lot of time to kill over these days but I’ve always been interested in prosthetics, particularly what allows amputees to run, play sports, and have a reasonably normal lifestyle. As such, I’ve been following the work of Andrew Gordon and his team.
Gordon has created a new prosthetic device, one that captures the movement of an actual limb and uses it to generate energy and actuate the prosthesis. I’ve long been fascinated with biomechanics, and over the years I’ve been learning about the science and engineering involved in creating prosthetics. And so, when Gordon showed off the Limbify project at TEDxBedford, I was intrigued.
One question that I’ve had about prosthetic limbs is how they are controlled by the amputee. Sure, there are some devices out there that allow for a degree of sensorimotor feedback, but it’s usually only a small amount. The Limbify project is meant to change that, and to make the limb feel like an actual limb. The trick, however, is making it work.
Gordon has been working on this for some time, and has been conducting animal trials for the last six months. The limb is able to replicate the feel and sensation of a real limb. By using both real muscle tissue and a system of actuators and sensors, he’s been able to do it.
It’s still not perfect. The goal is a long-term solution, not a one-time fix. In the meantime, the team is still tinkering and optimizing, but Gordon is aiming to deliver a functional limb within the next year.
